I was born in MN, and have lived here for most of my life. I took a small detour to IA for about 4 years, and since moving back I don't want to leave. Every state has its own claim to fame, and it is nice to remember what makes MN so special, besides the people of course.

  1. St. Paul was originally called Pig’s Eye. Yes, you read that correctly, Pig's Eye.  Originally our state capital was named after Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant, a French-Canadian fur trapper. The name was later changed to honor the first Catholic log chapel built.
  2. Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”…and 90,000 miles of shoreline. That is more shoreline than the State of Hawaii, Florida, and California combined. There are also actually 11,842 lakes in MN, somehow the land of 10,000 lakes just rolls off the tongue much easier.
  3. Minnesota has an official state muffin.  The official state muffin is blueberry, chosen because wheat is a huge crop in MN, and wild blueberries grow in Nothern MN.
  4. Minnesota: Starting trends in the literary scene since 1889 (at least). The first children's library department was started at the Minneapolis Public Library.
  5. Minnesota’s theater scene holds some records. Minnesota is the home of the longest running theater (The Old Log Theater) and the largest dinner theater, the Chanhassen Dinner Theater, in the country.
