The Cannon Falls Police Department issued a press release Tuesday stating on Sunday, October 9, about 4PM a male attempted to abduct a 10-year-old girl from a park in Cannon Falls.

The attempt was made in the Lower Hannah's Bend Park. The beautiful park sits across the street from the Community Pool.

The Cannon Falls Police Department says the man grabbed the girl and carried her while running across the park. She was able to get away after he put her down to catch his breath by sprinting away.

The suspect was described as:

  • White Male in his 20s
  • Approximately 6 feet tall
  • Approximately 180 pounds
  • Wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white or yellow animated/cartoon drawing over the left side; the drawing was dirty in appearance/design
  • The hood was tied and pulled to cover his head and a majority of his face
  • Dark brown hair
  • Light color blue denim jeans with some holes in each knee. The jeans were baggy and dirty, but not painter or carpenter style
  • Black dirty work boots
  • Wearing sunglasses, hot pink frame, the lens were black
  • Slightly deeper toned voice than average

Cannon Falls police say a father was playing with two small children in Lower Hannah's Bend Park playground who left just before the attempted abduction occurred. The Cannon Falls Police Department would like to speak with him about anything he may have seen while in or leaving the park.

Authorities are also asking for information from anyone who may have been in the area of Hannah's Bend Park, Cannon Valley Fairgrounds or the new DNR bike trail from Cannon Falls to Lake Byllesby between 3PM and 5PM on Sunday, October 9. The Cannon Falls Police Department phone number is (507) 263-2278.

Cannon Falls Chief Jeff McCormick says anyone with information should report it to them and adds, "Cannon Falls is a safe place to live, work and play, but like any other community, things do happen, which is why we advise that people lock their cars, houses and if they see something suspicious to report it. This does not mean that you should alter your activities, just be vigilant to what is occurring."

The chief states no further details will be released until charges are filed.
