Are You Ready for Back to School?

Soon it will be time to put the kids on the bus and send them off to school. For some kids, this fall may be their first time and maybe they don't have older siblings to help them through the routine. I can't imagine what that is like, especially if you are new to the area and have not made any friends yet.

I didn't have to worry about that much because my grade school was a block and a half from my house. And I had so many of my friends on the bus when I went to high school there were no worries there. And of course you didn't want to look scared starting high school. Seniors in high school feed on scared freshmen. At least back then.

Motorists should be on the lookout for the buses as well as pedestrians and bicyclists.

Here are some other important tips.

Getting on the bus:

• Stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing with others.
• Do not stray into the street, alleys or private property
• Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches.
• Do not approach the bus until it has stopped and the doors are opened.
• Use the handrail when boarding.
