Faribault Bethlehem Academy played for just the second time outdoors and flashed some leather in a 2-1 win over the Triton Cobras in Dodge Center Tuesday night.  Senior right handed pitcher Tess Glenzinski threw 99 pitches, 64 for strikes, scattered four hits, struck out three and walked 3, one intentionally.  She also hit a batter.

It was the Cobras third game and their third loss.  It was the first game for the Cardinals with three seniors and a number of new faces in their lineup.  Triton has five seniors.  Starting pitcher Makenna Meyers is one of those seniors and it's amazing she only allowed two runs. Bethlehem Academy had 11 hits in the game led by senior Jessica Oathoudt and sophomore Grace Ashley's three hit efforts.

The Cardinals scored their only runs in the first inning.  After Glenzinski smacked a ball back to the pitcher which was knocked down and kept near the pitching circle for a infield single, Glenzinski stole second.  With one out Oathoudt hit a single advancing Glenzinski to third base.  Oathoudt stole second.  Senior clean up batter Grace Viland grounded out with Glenzinski scoring on the play.  Oathoudt scored on a wild pitch and that's all the runs they would see in the game.

Triton's only run came on a solo homer by junior third baseman Haylee Sawyer to lead off the second inning.  The round tripper came on a 2-2 count.  The next two times up the Cardinals did not give her a chance to hit another home run.  She was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning after a 2-0 count and was intentionally walked in the sixth inning with two outs and a runner on.

Bethlehem Academy stranded 8 on the bases with 5 in scoring position and the Cobras had four runners left, two in scoring position.

The Cardinals had other chances to pad their lead.  In the fourth inning with one out junior Maggie Viland walked and Ashley got her second hit to put runners at first and second.  Triton's senior pitcher got her fifth strikeout and a ground out ended the threat.

In the fifth inning after one out freshman shortstop Malia Hunt switched from attempting slap hits from the left side of the plate to batting from the right side and hit a solid single to center.  Right after Hunt was thrown out trying to steal second Oathoudt clubbed a double and was stranded at second to end the inning.

The top of the sixth started with a ball that may have been the hardest hit of the night off the bat of seventh grader Katie Trump.  the line drive smacked off the center field fence. Trump was thrown out by a few feet at second because Triton outfielder Caitlyn Sowieja played it perfectly.   Maggie Viland followed with a single, Ashley got her third hit placing runners at first and second with one out.  A pinch hitter was retired and number nine hitter junior Jacie Jasinski cracked a single.  Head Cardinal coach Maren Viland waved Maggie Viland home and she was thrown out at the plate.

In the top of the seventh Glenzinski laid down a perfect bunt for her second hit of the game and Hunt sacrificed Glenzinski to second.  She went to third on a ground out and did not score after another ground out.  The Cardinals had the lead batter on base in four of the seven innings.

It was hard to believe Bethlehem Academy had only been outdoors once the way they played defense.  Oathoudt caught two line drives at third and turned both into double plays be quickly throwing to first base to get runners trying to get back to the bag.

Junior Nicole Menard made a nice catch in right field.  Hunt made an incredible diving catch of a scalded ball off the bat of senior catcher Alissa Hallaway to start the bottom of the seventh in the one run game.

Cardinal catcher Grave Viland threw out the first runner attempting to steal and there were no attempts after that.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were Glenzinski, Oathoudt and Ashley combining for 8 of the team's 11 hits and Glenzinski earning the victory in the pitching circle.
