There is a shortage of memory care in the Faribault area, and Birchwood Cottages of Owatonna is hoping to fill some of that void.

Julie Wood from Birchwood Cottages of Owatonna will be stopping by the KDHL studio today to inform us about their facility.

We will discuss the challenges of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's and dementia, and the differences between the two.

We will talk about their unique facility, which will open in mid-December at 1905 Austin Road in Owatonna.

I had a grandmother with Alzheimer's. They did not call it that though; it was called senility then.

In the early 1970s, I will never forget visiting Grandma in the nursing home in a Twin Cities suburb and my father crying like a little baby when she did not recognize him.

I was about 16 at the time and it was the first time I ever saw my dad cry.

Grandma didn't know me or my younger sister either. She thought Dad was her husband.

So Alzheimer's is a cruel disease.

I hope you can tune in at 9:30AM or check it out on our YouTube channel.
