The next installment in Bob Dylan's bootleg series is just a few weeks away, but impatient fans can get an early taste of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 today.

You can listen to the stream of Dylan's first take on "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" above. At the time, it still had the working title "Look At Barry Run." A far less aggressive version than the track Dylan ultimately released as a single, this arrangement has hints of "Like a Rolling Stone."

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" arrives shortly after the pre-release stream of "Sitting on a Barbed Wire Fence," which — like the rest of the collection — springs from the remarkably creatively fertile period that produced the classic Dylan trilogy Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde.

As previously reported, The Cutting Edge's Nov. 6 release will come in a variety of configurations — casual fans can opt for a truncated double-disc version, while more passionate Dylan converts can choose between an expanded six-disc version or a comprehensive 18-disc collector's box, pressed in a limited 5,000-copy run, that a press release promises "will include every note recorded during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyric."

Like Dylan's other Bootleg Series releases, The Cutting Edge opens a window into his song development process during a specific period in time, and illustrates how he gained crucial perspective on his own material through studio experimentation. "At the beginning, most songs were fairly shapeless," band member Al Kooper told Rolling Stone. "Only little by little did they come together."
