Watch Previously Unreleased ‘Ramrod’ Footage From Bruce Springsteen’s 1980 Tour

Bruce Springsteen fans have been given their first glimpse of the video bonus material from his upcoming The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set, in the form of a live rendition of "Ramrod" culled from previously unreleased 1980 concert footage.

The "Ramrod" clip, which you can watch above, was premiered by the fan site Backstreets, whose report makes note of the fact that the show took place in Tempe, Ariz., on Nov. 5, 1980, the day after Ronald Reagan was elected to his first term as President of the United States — a political development that inspired Springsteen to tell the crowd, "I don't know what you guys think about what happened last night, but I think it's pretty frightening."

Despite those fears, the mood captured here is far from somber. From the opening moments of the footage, during which Springsteen laughingly fumbles with a microphone cable while repeatedly yelling "wait a minute," this version of "Ramrod" is a rollicking rave-up propelled by a band whose collective performances are both playfully ragged and thoroughly in sync.

It all adds up to an effective teaser for The Ties That Bind box, which commemorates Springsteen's landmark The River LP by surrounding a remastered version of the album with outtakes, alternate versions (including an alternate version of the album itself), live and rehearsal footage, and a new documentary, as well as a book filled with photos and a new essay from critic Mikal Gilmore.

The Ties That Bind: The River Collection comes out on Dec. 4, and is now available for pre-order.
