In Moorhead, MN, there's a special Dairy Queen. It's special because it opens every March first, no matter the weather. I've seen people line up down the sidewalk in a blizzard to get a blizzard on March 1st! It's also special because, without Bob and Phyllis Litherland, who opened the Dairy Queen in 1949, we would not have The Dilly Bar.

Phyllis Litherland, who died Sunday at age 90, and her husband told this story many times. It all started in 1955...

(Duluth News Tribune) "A couple of brothers who supplied ice cream mix stopped by. Somebody poured a swirl of ice cream on paper, stuck a stick in it and dipped it into chocolate...although most Dairy Queens today buy their Dilly Bars from a supplier to company specifications, the DeLeons continued the tradition of making them fresh in the store."

A cool piece of Minnesota history.
