The Faribault Falcons traveled to Red Wing on Tuesday and had a long bus ride home after a 9-0 loss on a gorgeous evening for baseball.

The Red Wing Athletic Field is a beautiful complex and now has a new scoreboard. One of the field caretakers told me the Red Wing Aces amateur baseball team approached the city council and said a new scoreboard was needed. Just as the council was saying it probably would not be happening, the Aces representative said he would raise the money for it and the council agreed to install it.

He told me the cost of the scoreboard was $110,000 installed, so with the city kicking in the installation it cost $85,000. Unfortunately it was not hooked up for usage Tuesday night. They hope to have it ready for an Aces game this Sunday.

The large scoreboard has your basics and some other added features like a spot where pitch counts can be shown.

Faribault had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the first inning and take a lead after leadoff hitter Dylan Vargo reached safely on an error to start the game. However, no Falcons could get a hit off Red Wing senior starting pitcher Ben Domagala.

In the bottom of the first, Faribault senior starting pitcher Graham Gulsvig got ahead of eight of the nine batters he faced and had two strikes on eight of the nine. You would think it was a pretty good formula for success.

Gulsvig simply could not record outs during a 41-pitch inning that he didn't get to finish. He walked two batters and could have faced only a handful, but an error on what would have been a double play extended the inning.

Red Wing scored eight runs on seven hits in the inning and had 13 batters come to the plate.

Colton Helgeson replaced Gulsvig to face the final four hitters and, after throwing 10 pitches, finally got the third out of the inning on a well hit line drive to left field caught by Peyton Miller.

The Falcons had not played a game since April 22 at US Bank Stadium against then-No. 2 rated New Ulm. The Eagles are rated tops in Class 3A now.

Take nothing away from Domagala, he consistently hit a generous outside corner that the umpire was consistently calling and the Falcons were never swinging at.

Faribault had just two hits in the game -- a solid single in the second with two outs by Miller and a bloop single in the sixth with one out by Jake Louwagie.

The Falcons advanced just one runner as far as third base and that was in the first inning when Louwagie stole second and went to third on a fielder's choice with two outs.

Red Wing scored their ninth run in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to two Faribault errors.

The Falcons had four pitchers throw in the game. Helgeson faced nine batters with 24 pitches thrown, 13 for strikes, fanning no batters and walking two. He allowed one run on two hits. Junior Blake Borwege threw just over three innings and faced 14 batters while throwing 45 pitches, 29 for strikes. He walked two and hit a batter while striking out one and allowing one hit. The one run off Borwege was unearned. Senior Omar Escobar threw to the final three hitters for Red Wing in the bottom of the sixth and threw five pitches to get out of the inning.

The Wingers had the 10th run in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings and could not plate it to end the game early.

The Falcons were shut out for the fourth time this season in 10 games and fell to 3-7 on the season. It was their fifth straight loss.

Red Wing scored the most runs in a win this season. They did have nine runs in an eight-inning loss to Bemidji.

Here are your line totals:

Faribault: 0 runs, 2 hits, 3 errors, 6 runners left on base, 1 in scoring position

Red Wing: 9 runs, 9 hits, 1 error, 8 runners left on base, 5 in scoring position

The Wingers are now 5-4 and travel to Mankato West on Thursday, then go to Rocori on Saturday before hosting Rochester Century on Tuesday.

The Falcons host John Marshall on Thursday, then see Albert Lea at Bell Field for a doubleheader Saturday before four games next week.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were Borwege, Louwagie and Miller. In addition to his hit, Louwagie made a brilliant hustle play to rob a Winger of a sure double and throw him out at second base.
