The Mankato West Scarlets scored two power play goals en route to a 4-2 win over the Faribault Falcons Tuesday night at the Faribault Ice Arena.

The Faribault Falcon boys hockey team entered play Tuesday with 3 power play goals in 50 attempts.

The Falcons had allowed 16 power play goals in 46 attempts.

Those specialty team numbers continued in the wrong direction.  The Scarlets tallied two goals on four attempts and Faribault did not have a power play goal in five attempts.

The first period saw both teams struggle to generate any offense.

Mankato West senior Cole Fossen scored the first goal of the game 4:27 into the contest.  It was his second goal of the year and was assisted by classmates Kam Krueger (4) and Ethan Swenson (8).

The score was 1-0 Mankato West at the first intermission with the Scarlets entering the break on the power play and having 1:46 of a power play to start the second period.

The Falcons got a penalty on the opening face-off of the second period when Faribault senior Dylan O'Neal tried to step through and tripped a Scarlet player putting Mankato West into a 5 on 3 advantage.

Forty two seconds into the second period Mankato West was up 2-0 on a power play goal by Ethan Swenson (2).  He was assisted by Jayden Hatkin (12).

Fifteen seconds later Faribault freshman defenseman Grady Goodwin was at neutral ice and appeared to be attempting to dump the puck into the Scarlets zone when the puck went in the net to make it 2-1.

It was Goodwin's second goal of the season at the :57 mark of the second period.

Eighteen seconds after that goal Swenson got his third goal of the season on another power play with assists to sophomore Brandon Swenson (11) and freshman Wyant Fowlds (3) to make it 3-1.

Faribault made it 4-2 when sophomore Braden Schroeder scored his second goal of the year on an unassisted goal at the 5:03 mark.

The only goal of the third period was another quick score by Fossen (3) thirty nine seconds into the final period.

Faribault had a couple of great opportunities to score bu Mankato West freshman Caleb Cross was able to get the stops and secure the win.

The Scarlets out shot the Falcons in each period 5-2 in the first, 11-6 in the second and 12-10 in the third for a total of 28-18 in favor of Mankato West.

Faribault did not record their first shot on goal until 15 minutes into the game.

Senior Falcon goalie Adam Vos came into the game with some impressive statistics.  A 1.08 goals against average and .954 save percentage.  Mankato West scored their first three goals on their first nine shots of the game.

But the Scarlets controlled the puck most of the time and had a few breakaways and rushes to the net.

Coming into the game he had a goals against average of 4.00 and .789 save percentage.

Those numbers came down after his stellar performance.
