The Faribault Falcon boys soccer team looked tired Thursday in their third-place contest with the top-seeded St. Thomas Academy Cadets.

The Cadets had a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to senior goalkeeper Adam Johannsen making some incredible saves. They finished with a 4-1 win for the third-place hardware.

St. Thomas Academy had 19 first-half shots and 10 shots in the second half for 29 total and also had 14 corner kicks in the match, 12 of those came in the first half.

Faribault finished with six total shots and four on goal. They had just one corner kick.

The Falcons' lone goal came when they were behind 3-0 about 13 minutes into the second half.

Senior midfielder Mohamed Osman scored on a header after junior midfielder Mustafa Abdullahi made a nice pass to him.

St. Thomas Academy senior Mark Bastians had a hat trick for the Cadets.

St. Thomas Academy was whistled for five offsides and Faribault zero.

It was Faribault's first trip to the state tournament and head coach Brendan Cox told KDHL hopefully this will inspire future soccer players to hunger for the same success.

Despite losing their last two games in the tournament, Faribault certainly proved they belonged there.

As I noted after their semifinal loss to Orono on Wednesday night, other members of the media told me Faribault had the fastest team they saw on the Husky Stadium turf in St. Cloud.

They couldn't use that speed against St. Thomas. The Cadets proved to everyone why they were the top seed in the tournament, dominating control of the ball.

Falcon junior midfielder Abdiwahab Abdullahi and senior defender Fabian Macias were named to the All-Tournament team.

Faribault will definitely miss 14 seniors that grew their game by leaps and bounds in their four years in the program.

The Falcons finished their season with a record of 15-7 and brought back to Faribault the fourth-place trophy, something scores of other teams across the state would love to have in their trophy case.

Faribault conducted themselves with class and represented the community very well on the biggest stage for boys high school soccer in Minnesota.

No. 2 seed Orono beat No. 4 seed Breck for the state Class A championship in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win.

In Class AA, the No. 4 seed Anoka Tornadoes downed No. 2 seed East Ridge for the title.

In girls state soccer in Class A, top seed Benilde-St. Margaret's defeated Orono 4-2, and the AA state title goes to No. 3 seed Eagan after a 1-0 win over No. 5 seed Eden Prairie.

In the third-place contests, in Class A Mahtomedi won on their home turf 3-2 over Princeton, and in Class AA top seed Lakeville North beat Mounds View 1-0.
