Faribault Fire Chief Dusty Dienst joins us on AM Minnesota today because this is Fire Prevention Week. The program begins at 9:30AM.

If you can't tune in then, listen and watch the program at www.youtube.com/user/KDHLRadio.

This year's Fire Prevention Week focus is smoke alarms. The campaign theme is "Don't wait-check the date! Replace smoke alarms every 10 years," helps educate the importance of replacing smoke alarms.

Determining smoke alarm age and the expiration date is simple. Look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date rather than the date of purchase.

For safety it's also encouraged to:

  • Install smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.
  • Test alarms at least once a month.
  • Make sure everyone in the home knows what a smoke alarm sounds like and understands what to do when it activates.
