Faribault Girls Hockey Season Crashes to a Halt

The Faribault Falcon girls hockey season ended Saturday night when the Rochester Lourdes Eagles cruised to a 6-0 win in Rochester.  It was the third time this season the Eagles were able to defeat the Falcons.  Last time they played in Rochester the score was 3-2 giving Faribault hope they could knock off the #2 seed.

Faribault was the #3 seed in the Section 1 Class A playoffs and Lourdes was rated #15 in the latest Let's Play Hockey Class A rankings.  The Eagles controlled the action with two power play, two short handed and two even strength goals.

Rochester Lourdes had 29 shots and Faribault 15 shots on goal.  The Falcons were 0 for 4 on the power play and Eagles 2 for 3.

In fact the first goal of the game 13:02 into the contest came ten seconds into a power play after a phantom interference call. It appeared to me and fans sitting next to me that Haley Lang was leaving the ice and going over the boards to the bench when the call was made.  First period shots were 14-4 in favor of the Eagles.

In the second period at 8:15 a short handed goal was scored followed at 11:04 by an even strength score and heading into the final period Rochester Lourdes was up 3-0.  Shots in the second period were 6 each.

9:55 of the third period the Eagles added another power play goal.  Two minutes later they scored another even strength goal and their last goal at 15:06 was short handed.  Shots in the third period were 9 to 5 in favor of Lourdes.

Sophomore forward Emma Schmitz had a hat trick for the Eagles and two assists.

Senior goalie Clare Brunn collected her fourth shutout of the year and came into the game with a goals against average of 3.00 and save percentage of .872.

Salmonsen's numbers coming into the game were 2.45 and .917.

The Eagles like the Falcons are young this season.  Each team with two seniors.

Faribault ended their year 15-11.

Seniors Allyson McCoshen and Camryn Salmonsen provided great leadership for the team and the tears were flowing from them in particular at the end of the game.

Anyone who has ever participated in high school or college sports understands the feeling when your final game in your career ends.  It's so sudden.  All the practices, the bus rides to games and the battles with your friends come crashing to a halt.

The Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were the two seniors. Salmonsen finished the night with 23 saves.

The senior season was very good for Salmonsen and McCoshen.

Allyson had 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points.  Head Coach Ali Miller noted during one of our visits at Faribault Interiors that McCoshen improved her game each season and in particular took a big leap her senior year.

Salmonsen was second in the Big Nine in total saves with 622, third in save percentage and tied with Red Wing's Tyler McGrath with six regular season shutouts.

Salmonsen had a shutout in the first round of the playoffs to finish the year with 7.
