Faribault Police Chief Andy Bohlen issued a news release detailing a serious physical assault that occurred on Saturday in the 300 block of NW 7th Street.  Officers were dispatched to a report of an assault in progress.  The caller informed dispatch one of the men had a knife.  Upon arrival officers found the suspect sitting on top of the victim, and the suspect appeared to be punching and strangling the victim on the floor.

Officers also saw a "considerable amount of blood on the floor, walls and both persons' clothing."  There was a large kitchen knife on the floor between the two.  The 27 year old male suspect stopped his assault of the 40 year old male victim after several verbal commands from officers.  The Faribault Police Department news release says, "He remained physically non-compliant with officers as they attempted to handcuff him, and a Taser was used to take him into custody."

Chief Bohlen says officers administered emergency medical aid to the victim, who suffered a laceration to the head and several smaller lacerations.  He was transported to Allina District One Hospital in Faribault where he was treated and released.

27 year old Bishar Mahamed was arrested and jailed.  In a post-Miranda statement the news release says, "Mahamed admitted to being in a fight with the victim, admitted to having a knife, but denied cutting the victim."  Formal charges are expected to be filed against Mahamed today.

In his news release Chief Bohlen said, "If it wasn't for the caller's quick actions, this victim may not have survived the brutal attack and we could easily have been dealing with the aftermath of a homicide."

The Faribault Police Chief says the caller reported the incident while it was in-progress and encourages all of us to call authorities when they witness things because in many instances seconds literally can save lives.
