Undated (KROC AM News) - It appears a slippery road was involved in deadly traffic wreck near St. Peter during Thursday’s snow event.

The Minnesota State Patrol says a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Richard Okoneski of St. Peter lost control, left the road and crashed into a tree. He died at the scene of the 2:00 PM wreck. A passenger - 55-year-old Margie Okoneski - suffered serious injuries. The State Patrol report indicates the road was covered with snow and ice.

Another wreck near Owatonna Thursday afternoon also happened while it was snowing. The State Patrol says 60-year-old Peggy Meyer of Nicollet was driving on Highway 14 and moved to the right to make way for a snowplow. Her car hit some slush, spun out of control and hit a sign. She and a passenger - 29-year-old Ashley Meyer of Waseca - were taken to Owatonna Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

There were dozens of other wrecks around southeast Minnesota on Thursday due to the snow but most were minor.

Rochester responded to 31 incidents, mostly fender-benders.
