The father of a toddler shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis just two days after Philando Castile was killed has been charged with returning gunfire in the incident.

Melvonte Peterson, 25, of Brooklyn Center allegedly shot at a black Impala that pulled up by his van on the corners of Lowry and Penn North and started shooting, according to a Star Tribune report and a criminal complaint filed Friday in Hennepin County District Court. One of the shots from the Impala struck Peterson's son, Le'Vonte King Jason Jones, 2, in the chest, according to authorities. He later died. His 15-month-old sister was struck in the leg. She was taken to North Memorial and recovered.

Authorities said that Peterson, who has previous convictions for drug possession, is prohibited from carrying a firearm.

Peterson was arrested on Friday and booked into county jail. He is being held on $500,000 bond. He is charged with possessing a firearm after a conviction for violent crime, and drive-by shooting, both felonies. A court date has not been set.

The funeral for Le'Vonte was Friday in St. Paul.
