The Sheriff of Sibley County, Bruce Ponath, has died. His obituary didn’t include a cause of death. the Sheriff's death comes after he announced he wouldn't run for re-election in November. 

The 53-year-old law enforcement officer passed away at a hospital Saturday at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. According to his obituary from the Belle Plaine Herald Ponath grew up on a family run farm in New Auburn Township and graduated from Glencoe High School.

Ponath served as sheriff in Sibley County for 16 years.  He had previously worked for police departments in Silver Lake, Stewart, and Le Center.  He also served as a deputy in Sibley County, then as Chief Deputy for four years before being elected sheriff.

Earlier this month Chief Deputy Patrick Nienaber was elected to replace Ponath in the general election.

Ponath’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 Friday morning at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Ponath is survived by his wife of 26 years, Stephanie; and three sons named, Taylor, Max, and Mason.
