Goodhue assistant coach Mark Opsahl was named an assistant coach of the year by the Minnesota Boys Basketball Coaches Association. The Wildcats were defeated by the eventual Class A state champion Rushford-Peterson Trojans in the section final earlier this month.

Trojan head coach Tom Vix was named Section 1 Class A Coach of the Year. In Section 1 Class AA, Caledonia head coach Josh Diersen received the honor. The Section 2 Class AA selection was also named State Class AA Coach of the Year -- Chad Ostermann of Maple River. Section 1 Class AAA Coach of Year was Doug Toivonen of Red Wing, and the Section 1 Class AAAA selection was Jon Oxton of Lakeville North. In Section 2 AAA, Mankato East's Joe Madson was chosen and in Section 3 Class AAAA, Paul Goetz of Eastview received the honor.

State Coaches of The Year were Roger White of Red Lake in Class A, Chad Ostermann of Maple River in Class AA, Joe Schmitz of Hermantown in AAA and Mark Tuchscherer of Champlin Park in AAAA.

The Section Academic Team Champions: Section 1 Class A, Rushford-Peterson; AA, Chatfield; AAA, Kasson-Mantorville; and AAAA, Owatonna. Section 2 AA, Maple River; AAA, Mankato West; AAAA, Shakopee. Section 3 AAAA, Eagan.

Academic All-State Team Champions: Class A, Red Rock Central; AA, Maple River; AAA, Detroit Lakes; and AAAA, Buffalo. Detroit Lakes was the only boys team in Minnesota with a team grade-point average above 3.5.

The Associated Press Player of the Year was Sacar Anim of three-time defending state champion Minneapolis DeLasalle. First Team All-State selections in addition to Anim were fellow seniors J.T. Gibson, Champlin Park; Marshawn Wilson, Hill-Murray; Bjorn Broman, Lakeview Christian Academy; and sophomore Gary Trent Jr. of Apple Valley.

Second Team All-State: Junior Brock Bertram of Apple Valley and seniors Jarvis Johnson of DeLasalle; John Warren of Hopkins; Marty Hill of Champlin Park; and Joe Rosga of Cretin-Derham-Hall.

Third Team All-State: Seniors Charlie Krambeer, Rushford-Peterson; Gorg Alhag, Mankato East; Jeremiah Hanson, Maranatha Christian Academy; Jalen Mobley, St. Paul Johnson; and junior Steffon Mitchell of Shakopee.

Named Academic All-Staters in Class A and AA: Jonah Breiter, Maple River; Cole Kingsley and Charlie Krambeer, Rushford-Peterson; John Rumpza, Blooming Prairie; Christian Bance, Chatfield; Luke Trio, United South Central; and Kyle Sorenson of Caledonia. Academic All-State selections in Class AAA and AAAA in the KDHL listening area were Wyatt Ferm of Farmington and Dan Jech of Rochester Mayo.

The 33rd annual Minnesota Boys high school basketball all-star series is this weekend.  Doubleheaders will be played Friday beginning at 8 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall on the St. Cloud State campus and 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the Leonard Center on the Macalester College campus in St. Paul. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and 5 and younger are free. Forty of the state's best senior players have been invited, including Gach Gach of Austin, Gorg Alhag of Mankato East and Dan Jech of Rochester Mayo out of the Big Nine. Cole Kingsley of Rushford-Peterson, John Rumpza of Blooming Prairie, Kyle Sorenson of Caledonia and Drew Guebert of Eastview are joined by Anim, Jarvis Johnson and Josh Collins, all of DeLasalle, playing on different teams. The coaches of the four teams are Bill Pocernich of Cromwell, Larry Mckenzie of Minneapolis North, Skip Dolan of Annandale and Ted Critchley of Roseville Area.
