The Goodhue Wildcats girls basketball team is seeded No. 2 in the Class A Tournament and open play Thursday afternoon at 3PM in Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.

The Wildcats' opponent will be Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther out of Section 2.

Mountain Iron-Buhl is the top seed and plays the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles (25-3). Cromwell-Wright (24-4) received the No. 3 seed and faces Red Lake (24-2). No. 4 seed Ada-Borup (28-1) tangles with No. 5 seed Maranatha Christian Academy (21-7).

If Goodhue wins, their semifinal game will be at 2PM St. Patrick's Day at Williams Arena.

The Mustangs of Granada Huntley East Chain-Truman have the same record as Goodhue, 25-4. They lost twice to a very good Mankato Loyola team and were defeated by Sleepy Eye in their season opener. The other loss was an overtime game against Martin County West. In their section run, they picked up victory margins of 43, 25, 9 and 10.

GHEC/Truman has six straight wins while the defending Class A champion Goodhue is riding an eight-game winning streak.

No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked Mountain Iron-Buhl beat Goodhue 78-34 in Hopkins on December 3 and Wildcats head coach Josh Wieme said that was a wake-up call for his team. They realized they were going to have to put in a lot of work to get back to the state tournament and defend their title and they did.

The Rangers' only loss came to Roseau 80-67. The Rams are the No. 1 seed in the Class AA tournament and will open with Section 2 champion New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva. A tough draw for the Panthers, but they upset Norwood-Young America in their section title game to get to state so maybe they are the giant killers this season.

That game will be played at 2PM Wednesday at Mariucci Arena.

In the Class AA tournament, Section 1 representative Rochester Lourdes was not seeded and draws the No. 3 seed Watertown-Mayer Royals for their first opponent at 8PM Wednesday.

The Eagles edged Kenyon-Wanamingo in a physical Section 1 title game and are 20-9. The Royals are 26-3 with their losses coming to Orono, Eden Valley-Watkins and Annandale.

No. 5 seed Esko (23-6) will play No. 4 seed New London-Spicer (25-3) at 4PM Wednesday. No. 2 seed Sauk Centre (28-1) is riding a 27-game winning streak when they open against Minnehaha Academy (24-4) at 6PM Wednesday.

The Class AAA tournament No. 1 seed is Orono (23-5) and they open with Willmar (20-9) Tuesday at 6PM at the Target Center.

No. 2 seed Academy of Holy Angles (25-3) tangles with Waseca (23-6) at 10AM Wednesday at Mariucci Arena. No. 3 seed Winona (24-4) plays DeLaSalle (18-10) at noon Wednesday at Mariucci. No. 4 seed Grand Rapids (22-5) will face No. 5 seed Alexandria Area (25-4) at 8PM Tuesday at the Target Center.

The AAA semifinals are noon and 2PM at Williams Arena on Thursday.

The Class AAAA tournament has No. 1 seed Hopkins (29-0) opening with Minnetonka (16-12) at 10AM Tuesday at the Target Center. No. 2 seed Elk River (31-0) plays White Bear Lake Area (19-9) at 2PM Tuesday at the Target Center. No. 3 seed Lakeville North (27-2) faces Andover (20-9) at 4PM at Target Center on Tuesday. No. 4 seed Eastview (23-6) hits the hardwood with No. 5 Park Center (24-5) at noon Tuesday at Target Center.

The semifinals are at 6PM and 8PM Thursday at Williams Arena. All the championship games Saturday are at Williams Arena.
