If Wisconsin Lowers The Drinking Age To 19, Is Minnesota Next?

When it comes to being able to legally drink in Minnesota, there has been plenty of debate over what age most appropriate. Some people agree with keeping it at 21. Others argue that it should be lowered. There are even those who believe in raising the legal limit (Hi, Aunt Mary!).

That debate may begin to heat up again, as a new bill being circulated among lawmakers in Wisconsin could lower the state’s drinking age to 19.

Before college freshmen at the University of Wisconsin start celebrating, the proposal would only lower the legal limit as long as the state wouldn’t lose any of its federal highway funding. Because of a federal law passed in 1984 that penalizes states that didn’t set the legal drinking limit at 21, Wisconsin would stand to lose $53.7 million in federal highway funds. Not exactly a blip on the radar.

We’ll see what shakes out across the border, but here’s the question: Should Minnesota consider lowering its legal drinking age? Longtime residents might remember the days when the drinking age in the North Star State was 18, so it’s not a far-fetched idea. But what do you think?
