Jason Newsted, who left Metallica in 2001 and has been lying low for the past couple years, is reportedly involved in a new "mostly acoustic" project. The band, which is called Would and Steal, is a collaborative effort with musician Rob Tucker, but not much else is known about the project. So far, no music is available.

According to Metal Injection, Newsted will talk about this new project at 3PM ET on Friday in a Facebook live interview with Mighty Fine Guitars. Newsted will also perform at the Mighty Fine Guitars shop in Lafayette, Calif., on Aug. 5 and 6 for two benefit shows for Little Kids Rock, which assists with music programs in schools.

Newsted hasn't performed much since 2014, when he canceled a series of concert dates with his band Newsted, citing “private and personal circumstances.” Later that same year he left his Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.

But last month, he joined his post-Metallica band Voivod onstage in San Francisco for a few songs. Newsted was a member of the Canadian metal group when it restructured its lineup in the early '00s. He was friends with the band since the mid-’90s, when he was still a member of Metallica. He played on three of Voivod’s albums: 2003’s Voivod, 2006’s Katorz and 2009’s Infini, which was released a year after he left the band.

That same year, Newsted was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the other members of Metallica. If Would and Steal release a record, it will mark Newsted's first dedicated project since his self-named band's 2013 album, Heavy Metal Music.
