It was fun to talk with John Dvorak, the Rice County Fair manager, this morning on KDHL's AM Minnesota. With the nice warm weather over the weekend you have to think the Rice County Fair will be here soon. John mentioned that fair board members are always evaluating how to improve the fair. Events and activities that are popular they try to bring back. However, they are always looking for new attractions to bring to the Rice County Fair. One new activity in the grandstand this year is the battle of the bands.

County fairs are special because of local participation, whether it is apple pies entered in the open class contest to 4-H exhibits. Karaoke has gotten popular the past few years. The battle of the bands strikes me as an extension of a karaoke contest. Instead of one person performing, the battle of the bands has at least three. Local talent at a local county fair. That sounds fun doesn't it? For more information on the battle of the bands or other questions about the fair go to the website RiceCountyfair.net.
