Even in the midst of all of the turmoil last weekend, one St. Paul cop is trying to make things better, one resident at a time. They do not know she is a high ranking commander in the St. Paul Police Department. They don't know that Saturday she became the assistant chief. She just tells people that she's Mary.

Mary Nash says this makes her more human when the titles are gone. According to KSTP, Nash was asked at some of the protests, why she was being so nice. Which was hard since she watched other officers get hurt in the I-94 protests. Her response was to go along and hand out friendship bracelets. She said it was the only way to serve and protect.

And she just wants to be called Mary.

I have not had a chance to talk to any of our local law enforcement people yet. But I know enough of them that I am pretty sure they don't pick favorites. It does not matter what color you are. Sammy Davis Jr. said it best in the theme music from an old police show called Barretta. "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time."
