The Kenyon-Wanamingo baseball team remained unbeaten in the Hiawatha Valley League on Tuesday night with a 15-2 five-inning victory over the Triton Cobras.

It was very cold in Dodge Center and the Knights stole four bases in the first two innings.

They might have taken off to stay warm because they stood on the bases a lot with starting Triton freshman lefty Colt Kelly having problems throwing strikes.

In 2.1 innings Kelly walked 10 batters and hit two others, and errors errors didn't help much either.

Kelly threw 88 pitches in his brief outing, 32 were strikes, and he was five of 22 first-pitch strikes.

Kenyon-Wanamingo scored four runs in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a hit.

A baseball fan had to be impressed with the Knights' approach at the plate because you know they wanted to get hits but they were not going to swing at pitches out of the zone, and that's why 13 batters took walks and there were four hit batsmen.

Luke Rechtzigel continued to swing a hot bat with two of the team's hits, a double and a triple, and four RBI.

Blake Jacobson added an RBI single.

The Sviggum Insurance Agency of Wanamingo Knights of the game were Rechtzigel, Gavin Roosen who made a stellar play at shortstop and scored a couple of runs, had an RBI and walked three times, and winning pitcher Matt Houglum.

Houglum scattered five hits while striking out three and walking four. He threw 84 pitches in his five innings of work, 55 for strikes, and delivered 14 first-pitch strikes to the 23 batters he faced.

The Knights are 7-0 in the H-V-L and 10-1 overall and the Cobras are still searching for their first win after falling to 0-7 in the league and overall this season.

Triton is very young, not a senior on the team and just a couple of juniors. Cobra head coach Mike Ellingson says his team is "learning on the job."

Kenyon-Wanamingo head coach Randy Hockinson has been impressed with his team's defense and says, "They enjoy playing with each other."

Hockinson added he wasn't sure if the right batting order has been settled upon at this point in the season.
