Kenyon-Wanamingo junior Maddie McCauley hit a layup as time expired in a 79-77 overtime victory over the Goodhue Wildcats in Goodhue on Tuesday night.

Senior Mara Quam had four points at the half and Goodhue led 33-28.

I remember saying on the airwaves that Kenyon-Wanamingo head coach Brent Lurken was probably saying for his team to even be in the game with Quam's unusual low point total probably made him feel pretty comfortable.

Quam hit a reverse layup on the first offensive attack and never relented, finishing the game with 33 points.

After Goodhue senior McKenzie Ryan sank a free throw to give her team a three-point lead with about six seconds to go in regulation, the unthinkable happened if you are a Wildcat fan.

Mara Quam crossed half court and launched a shot and was fouled with 1.1 seconds to go in regulation. Quam, as cool as the other side of the pillow, made all three.

Goodhue inbounded the ball. Quam stole the inbounds pass and launched another half-court shot that just missed and the contest went into overtime.

At one point in the first half the Wildcats had a 20-8 lead and looked like they were going to run away with the game.

Goodhue 6-foot junior Sydney Lodermeier collected 31 points in the game and had 24 in the second half and overtime period. Goodhue had three other players in double figures: McKenzie Ryan 14, Maddy Miller 12 and Emily Benrud 11.

Kenyon-Wanamingo senior Savannah Bleess fouled out of the game with 18.8 seconds to go and finished with 19 points.

Before Quam sank the free throws to send the game into overtime, she hit an eye-popping three-pointer from the volleyball attack line. She finished the game 9 for 9 from the free throw line and Lodermeier was 10 of 12. The Knights were 13 of 15 and Wildcats 18 of 23 from the charity stripe.

The game was tied at 68 at the end of regulation.

The two teams traded three-pointers. Lodermeier hit another big shot and sank one of two free throws to give Goodhue a three-point lead, setting up Kenyon-Wanamingo's final McCauley heroics.

Goodhue understandably concentrated on Quam bringing the ball up the court and McCauley got open under the basket for her last-second layup has time expired.

Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme was not very happy after the game because he thought his team could have played better defensively. The No. 2 Class A rated Wildcats fell to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the Hiawatha Valley League.

Kenyon-Wanamingo is 14-7 overall and 8-4 in the league.

Our Held Bus Service Knights of the night were Quam, Bleess and McCauley.
