Police Release New Kurt Cobain Death-Scene Note

Seattle Police Department

After twenty years, Seattle police have released a possibly humorous, possibly scornful never-before disclosed note allegedly written by Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain and referencing his wife, Courtney Love. It was found tucked inside his wallet when his body was discovered from an apparent suicide on April 5, 1994.

As part of their ongoing, fresh look into the incident, the Seattle Police Department has released dozens of unseen photos of the scene to the public. After receiving a Freedom of Information Act request, the department went one step further and divulged hundreds of pages of materials related to the case.

Amid the pages and pages of police reports and collected evidence was a photocopy of a note apparently written by Cobain which read in part, “Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife, even when she’s a bitch with zits and siphoning all (your) money for doping and whoring…”

It is unknown at this time when Cobain authored the note (or even if, although the handwriting seems to be a match), but it apparently was written on stationary from a San Francisco hotel named the Phoenix.

For Cobain to express frustrations with his wife is certainly not out of the realm of possibility given the sometimes publicly acrimonious nature of their relationship. It is interesting, however, to read these words in juxtaposition with the singer’s accepted suicide note — where he writes, “I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy,” and implores her, “Please keep going Courtney, for [our daughter] Frances.”

It’s hard to gauge what this new bit of information really means, but it certainly does add another wrinkle to our understanding of Cobain’s frame of mind in the time leading up to his death.
