The Minnesota Amateur Baseball season began this weekend and Sunday the Faribault Lakers opened with a thrilling 2-1 win over the Lonsdale Aces.

The DRS League contest was played at Trenda Memorial Field in Lonsdale.

Evan Knutson threw a complete game five-hitter for Faribault.

The Lakers' next game is May 8 at Webster and Lonsdale plays next Sunday in Elko.

Other scores around the league:

  • St. Patrick 5, Union Hill 3 (WP-Josh Simon SV-Bill Dunker)
  • New Market 10, Montgomery 2
  • Elko 12, New Prague 2 (7 innings)
  • Prior Lake 5, Veseli  1
  • Shakopee Coyotes 13, Webster 0 (7 innings)

An interesting note for DRS fans -- just two games won by the home team in the openers.

The State Amateur Baseball Tournament at the end of the summer will be in Hutchinson, Dassel and Litchfield this year.

The Faribault Lakers are hoping to make it to state three years in a row.

In the Classic Cannon Valley League, the defending Class B State Champion Dundas Dukes play in the American Division with Class B teams Hastings, Miesville, Northfield and Red Wing.

The National Division includes Class C teams Cannon Falls, Lake City, Hampton and Randolph.

Remember the Cannon Falls Bears made it to the final weekend of the State Amateur C Tournament last season before falling to eventual State Class C Champion Plato.
