The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will be co-hosting a public meeting Tuesday night in Elysian.

Elysian city officials are also inviting residents to attend the meeting lay out the pros and cons of a pedestrian crossing on Highway 60.

The meeting begins 6:00 p.m. at the Elysian City Hall.

The $16 million dollar Highway 60 construction project will stretch from the junction with Highway 14 through the Highway 13 intersection in Waterville beginning in 2020.

In addition to possible pedestrian crossings, the project will also include resurfacing, and updating pedestrian ramps at turn lanes and sidewalks, along with additional lighting.

Elysian is the hometown of legendary KDHL broadcaster Bernard Andrew Zimprich who used the name Dean Curtiss on the airwaves.

Dean's voice was the first one heard on KDHL when the station signed on in January of 1948.

He passed away January 5, 1986 at the age of 59.

For years there was a sign along Highway 60 in Elysian proudly stating it was the birthplace of the longtime broadcaster.

It was taken down a number of years ago.

Maybe if a pedestrian crossing were placed in Elysian it could be called the Dean Curtiss Memorial Walkway.

Curtiss was President of the American Farm Broadcasters Association and was involved in meetings in the White House when Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford  and Jimmy Carter were there.

Curtiss is in the American Farm Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

He is not and should be in the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Former KDHL announcers Hiram Higsby and Johnny Western are in the Country Radio Hall of Fame and Country Music DJ Hall of Fame with much briefer stings on KDHL than Curtiss.
