The Dundas Dukes opened defense of their Class B Minnesota State Amateur Baseball title with a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to St. Michael on Sunday.

Charlie Ruud took the loss after throwing six innings and giving up seven hits and all three St. Michael runs. He walked two batters and struck out seven.

St. Michael pitcher Scott Lieser allowed just four hits while striking out nine Dukes hitters. He walked one and hit a batter in the game played in Litchfield.

Dundas couldn't take advantage of four St. Michael errors in the game.

In Class B opening round, losers are done for the season and the double elimination begins next weekend.

Meanwhile the Plato Bluejays cruised to a 11-1 win over Springfield in opening defense of their Class C state championship. Plato will face Fergus Falls Saturday at 5PM in Dassel.

The Miesville Mudhens crushed the Monticello Polecats 13-3 in their Class B tournament opener in Litchfield. The Mudhens cranked out 15 hits and Monticello had eight hits. The Polecats had five errors in the game. Jacob Dickmeyer was the winning pitcher.

Former Lake City Tiger and St. Olaf Ole Brian Sprout had four hits for Miesville and two RBI. Mat Van Der Bosch clubbed a three-run homer for the Mudhens.

Region 3C didn't fair too well on the opening weekend.

The Montgomery Mallards ended their season with a 4-3 defeat to St. Martin. St. Martin and Montgomery had eight hits apiece in the game.

Regal downed Shakopee 4-2 in 12 innings.

The Milroy Irish ended St. Benedict's season 4-3. The Irish tallied six hits and St. Benedict five. St. Benedict had three errors and Milroy one.

Fort Ripley rolled past Stewartville/Racine 15-2 thanks in part to six Sharks errors. Minnesota Lake beat Chokio 5-2 and Blue Earth blanked the St. Joeseph Joes 6-0.

In another Class B contest, former Triton Cobra star Logan Spitzack pitched a gem for the Austin Greyhounds in a 3-0 win over Cold Spring. Spitzack entered the scoreless game in the seventh inning and threw the final five and a third innings, allowing just three hits.
