Rice County Public Health Nursing representative Susan Prieve stops by our KDHL Studio to discuss the flu on AM Minnesota 9:30 a.m.

Minnesota is listed as widespread for flu activity and the same is true locally I've been told.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that can be serious, or even life-threatening.

It is what eventually took the lives of both my parents.

Dad was 88 and my Mom 89 when they passed and the death certificates list complications from the flu as the cause of death.

It takes two weeks for the body to respond to the vaccine, so getting the vaccination now means a person should reach full immunity before the typical peak of the flu season, between December and February.

Flu vaccination is especially important for those at higher risk for serious flu-related complications, such as children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes and other chronic health conditions.

It also helps protect people around you who may be more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies, the elderly, or those with chronic health conditions.

Although the vaccine will not prevent every case of the flu, health professionals tell us getting a vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk of serious illness.
