This Day in Rock History: October 31

On this day in rock history, Bob Dylan completed work on this first Top 20 U.S. hit, The Times They Are a-Changin. Home to “Boots of Spanish Leather,” the title track and “The Ballad of Hollis Brown” among other classic moments, this represented his initial album of all-original content.

The Marshall Tucker Band headlined the first of a series of campaign fundraisers in support of a presidential bid by Jimmy Carter, who was then governor of the South Carolina band’s neighboring state of Georgia. Eddie Van Halen joined an all-star cast on Queen guitarist Brian May‘s Star Fleet Project, along with REO Speedwagon drummer Alan Gratzer, May’s Queen bandmate Roger Taylor and others.

Also on this date, Paul McCartney released the second of two straight studio efforts with former Beatles collaborators George Martin and Ringo Starr; Tom Petty offered his first-ever official live project; then the Grateful Dead issued their final studio album with Jerry Garcia.
