Owatonna Golfer Tied Atop Leaderboard in State Tournament
Owatonna senior Peter Jones is tied with two other golfers in first place after the first day of the boys Class AAA State Golf Tournament.
Jones carded a 71 on the Bunker Hills course in Coon Rapids and is tied with a senior from Eden Prairie and a junior from White Bear Lake in the quest for meet medalist honors.
It was an intense opening round, with three teams tied for first: White Bear Lake, Wayzata and Edina. Section 1 representative Lakeville South is just seven shots in back of the leaders.
In Class AA, the Section 1 champion Triton Cobras had a rough day at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. Triton is in fifth place, 10 shots out of first. Blake has a one-shot lead over Mankato East for the lead. Earlier in the season the Cobras showed they are capable of having everyone card a low score, but that wasn't the case Tuesday. Junior Jaden Thiemann led the way with a 71, good enough to be tied for sixth place. The next lowest score for the Cobras was a 78 by senior Zach Otto.
Individually, Kasson-Mantorville senior Keragen Kochie is just one shot out of first place after shooting a 68. Cannon Falls junior Matt Moskal tallied a 79 to finish in the top 50.
In Class A boys, freshman Brock Bliese of Mounds Park Academy shot a 70 and has a two-stroke lead heading into Wednesday's final round at Pebble Creek in Becker. Ryan Pederson of United South Central is tied for sixth. The junior carded a 74. Junior Zach Monshaugen of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton is tied for 30th place with a 82. Hayfield senior Brady Becker isn't far behind with a 83 and junior Aaron Anderson of Hayfield fired a 92.
