The Owatonna Huskies girls hockey team came to Faribault on Tuesday night with no losses in the Big Nine.

After two periods, it was scoreless and any team's game, but junior Margo Achterkirch scored twice in the third period to lead her team to a 3-1 victory.

Achterkirch came into the game the fourth-leading scorer in the Big Nine and showed everybody at the Faribault Ice Arena why. It seems every girls hockey game I've seen the Falcons play against Owatonna the past couple of years Achterkirch has scored.

Her first goal came 7:17 into the third period with the assist to senior Jenna Bogen (15).  A quick pass from the left of Faribault goalie Camryn Salmonsen to an on-the-move Achterkirch heading down the slot toward the net.

Her second goal (24) she skated from the left of Salmonsen all the way behind the net to the right side back to the left of Salmonsen and notched a unassisted goal. It came at 9:35.

Owatonna added a power play goal off the stick of Bogen (18) with an assist to sophomore Maylynn Prokopec (1) at 13.32.

It looked like Owatonna junior goalie Laura Ebeling would notch her third shutout of the season but the Falcons pulled their goalie late and scored a power play goal with :59 to go in the game. Junior Allyson McCoshen scored her seventh goal of the season assisted by senior Alexis Ferris (10).

Shots on goal showed just how close this game was with Owatonna totaling 25 and Faribault 23. After two periods shots were even at 16 apiece and the Huskies then stepped it up a notch and out-shot the Falcons 12-7 in the final period.

Faribault came into the game with the second-best power play (in terms of percentage) in the conference (30.6 percent) but their penalty kill ranked 10th among the 12 teams.

Two of the Owatonna goals were power play goals and their power play had been performing at a 11.3 percent clip. The Huskies came into the game with the best penalty kill in the league (94.8 percent)

Owatonna improved their record to 14-5-2 overall and 12-0-2 in the Big Nine and Faribault dropped to 8-4 in the conference and 9-9 overall.

The Falcons host Mankato West on Thursday at 7PM and Huskies host Mankato East at the same time.
