The Pine Island Panthers placed second on the strength of two state relay championships at the State Class A Track and Field Meet in St. Paul on Saturday.

The event was held on the campus of Hamline University. The Panthers 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams are state champs. Seniors Jason Hoerle and Isaiah Ondler, sophomore Jack Williams and junior Mitchel Acker made up the 800 relay.

Seniors Ben Farrell, Christopher Frick and Jason Hoerle were joined by junior Kyle Groven in the 400 relay.

Groven placed second in the 400-meter dash at 49.48. Senior Jonathan Webb of Minnehaha Academy won the event in 48.59. Senior John Schuster of United South Central was sixth.

Groven was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.47. Senior Jonathan Webb of Minnehaha Academy won that title with a time of 11.26 on the windy day. Sophomore Leif Bungum of Triton also earned all-state status with an eighth-place finish.

Farrell was third in the 200-meter dash and junior Mitchel Acker was third in the 800-meter run. Faribault Bethlehem Academy senior Drew Busch earned all-state honors with a seventh-place finish. Waseca senior Shane Streich was a repeat champion in the event with a 1:54.59 time.

Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf senior Garrett Springer placed sixth in the discus to capture all-state status with a throw of 148 feet, 9 inches. A freshman from St. Clair, Mitchell Weber is champion with a toss of 169 feet, 10 inches. Waseca senior Tyler Kolander was third.

Kenyon-Wanamingo senior Caleb Greseth placed ninth in the 110-meter hurdles and junior Mason Stevenson was ninth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Waseca's 4x400 meter relay team won the state title with a time of 3:25.05. The all senior participants were Isaac Highum, Brady Bomsta, JP Eykyn and Shane Streich. P-E-M was fourth and Rochester Lourdes fifth.

The Bluejays 4x100 meter relay placed fourth to earn all-state honors. In addition to Bomsta, other members of the team were seniors Dylan Romain and Dylan Hermanstorfer and junior Nick Buchele. Lake City was fifth and P-E-M finished seventh.
