As the political season winds its way toward its climax on Tuesday, November 8, people are becoming more vocal about the candidates that they support. You see posts on Facebook about how they feel about their candidate and their candidate's opponent, you hear them on talk radio or at rallies, or read their opinions in the newspaper. Another way that to get their candidate some more notice is with the use of yard signs.

According to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, when placing signs around the community, please remember that political campaign signs are prohibited on state highway rights of way. County, city and township roads and highways also fall under that same law. This includes driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches and lines of sight corners at intersections. Violation of this law is a misdemeanor. MnDOT crews will remove the unlawfully placed signs and impound them until the owner can be located to retrieve them. Also, landowners must give consent before signs can be placed on their property.

If you need more information about sign placement, give Dan Evans at MnDOT a call at (507) 286-7593 or online at www.mndot.gov/govrel/rw_signs.html.
