The Power 96 Cool One on Wednesday was R.E.M.'s "Man on the Moon" from their eighth studio album, Automatic for the People. Released as the second single from the album, the Cool One hit the charts at No. 30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, No. 4 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, No. 2 on the Alternative Songs chart and No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart. Automatic for the People was released on October 5, 1992, and shot to No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and made it onto the top five in several countries around the world. Former Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones worked on the string arrangement for several songs on the album, including "Everybody Hurts," "Drive," Nightswimming" and "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite."
