Last Friday's Power 96 Cool One comes from a lesser-known artist from the big-hair era. Tora Tora hails from Memphis, Tenn., and got their first shot at some studio time when they won the local Battle of the Bands. With an EP under their belt, they received some airplay on their local radio station, which probably helped them get some notice from the record labels, and they were signed to A & M Records. In 1989 they released Surprise! Attack, which climbed to No. 47 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and featured yesterday's Cool One, "Walkin' Shoes," and which peaked at No. 86 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1990.

I enjoyed this band's sound, and they fit in well with other big-hair metal bands of the time. They unfortunately were never able to catch on as their second album, Wild America, failed to make it any any higher than No. 134 on the charts and their third album, which was recorded, never got released at the time. They disbanded shortly after this in 1994. The third album, Revolution Day, finally was released in 2011.

Listen for today's Power 96 Cool One at 4:35PM, brought to you by Kelly's Auto Parts. It comes from a California band that had 13 hits on the charts between 1970 and 1977.
