An early morning fire this week in the Twin Cities has prompted the Minnesota State Fire Marshal to encourage residents to practice their escape plan.

The Brooklyn Park fire on Tuesday injured several people and sent one to the hospital, according to a KSTP-TV story. The fire damaged multiple units of the three-story apartment building.

Along with a re-tweet of the story, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety included information on creating and practicing an emergency escape plan.

The resource indicates that more than 80 percent of families have not practiced a home fire drill and that you have less than two minutes from the time you hear your smoke detector to get out of the house. To be ready for the unthinkable you should have a designated location outside your home to meet. Be sure everyone knows two ways to get out of each room. Practice the plan.

According to the public safety website fire deaths in 2016 are at 14. In 2015, fire claimed 22 Minnesotans.

With Independence Day approaching, safety officials want residents to be safe with fireworks.
