This Saturday, May 21, in Armed Forces Day, a day to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches. Over the course of the next couple of days you'll see members of the American Legion Auxiliary handing out bright red crepe paper poppies around town to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the military and the sacrifices they've made to ensure our freedom. So when you run into these volunteers, be generous and purchase a few poppies. The proceeds go toward the Fischer House, across from the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis, where families of veterans can stay for free while their loved ones are in the hospital. It also funds holiday remembrances to local nursing home veterans, a steak fry at the Hastings Veterans Home each fall, repairs on a lake cottage where veterans from nursing homes can go fishing, and it helps local veterans in need as well as many other veteran-related projects.

I made a donation for my poppy earlier today when my Aunt Irene stopped by the Power 96 studios, as she does every year, and so did several of my coworkers. So please dig deep and do the same, if it wasn't for the brave men and women of the military, we wouldn't be enjoying all the things we do now.
