The title track from 1974's Burn has found its way into a trio of Deep Purple alumni set lists recently, leading to an inevitable question: Who played it best: Rainbow, Glenn Hughes or Whitesnake?

Ritchie Blackmore added "Burn" to the encore at Rainbow's recent concert at Birmingham, England, while former Purple frontman David Coverdale regularly played the song during Whitesnake's tour in support of The Purple Album. Hughes, who joined Blackmore and Coverdale as part of Deep Purple's list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees this year, is performing "Burn" as part of his on-going solo tour.

Blackmore was in Deep Purple from 1968–75 and then from 1984–93, founding and performing in Rainbow between and after those stints. He's since focused on Renaissance-style folk music, before making a brief return to rock with a reconstituted version of Rainbow this year. Coverdale and Hughes were members of Deep Purple from 1973–76.

As a side note, Deep Purple – which continues these days with frontman Ian Gillan – reportedly hasn't played "Burn" since 1993, just prior to Blackmore's final departure. Gillan didn't take part in Burn, the first of three Coverdale-led Deep Purple albums.
