Rice County Highway Engineer Dennis Luebbe will swing by the KDHL studio to talk about happenings in his corner of the world.

Luebbe attended Tuesday's County Board of Commissioners work session and brought forward a proposal to transfer County Road 87 to Wheeling Township.

He said Wheeling officials have embraced the idea and an August 8 public hearing will be held concerning the proposal at 7:30PM at the Wheeling Town Hall.

In addition to that item, we will be talking about the dilemma the Rice County Highway Department is facing concerning the spread of wild parsnip or yellow parsnip along the ditches throughout the county.

The leaves of the parsnip secrete a sap, and if you get it on your skin it is some really nasty stuff. Depending on the amount you get on yourself there is a burning of the skin, and in a lot of cases blisters develop.

Luebbe told a few of the commissioners after the meeting that the Highway Department doesn't have the budget to spray all the ditches and mowing takes a lot of man hours to complete.

I jokingly suggested they use commercial-grade Roundup in all the ditches and put artificial turf in them and then they would never have a weed problem again.

Do you have any suggestions? I'm sure the Rice County Highway Department would love to find a cost-effective solution.
