The unbeaten and state Class AA second-ranked Rochester Lourdes Eagles defeated the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights 7-3 on Monday night for the overall Hiawatha Valley League Championship.

It was the first trip to the title game for the Knights and head coach Randy Hockinson said he was proud of his team for competing against one the state's best in larger class.

Hockinson threw each of his starters so they would all be ready for the upcoming playoffs. The Eagles' big blow was a three-run homer off the bat of senior Henry Wittren off junior Ethan Benda.

Both Rochester Lourdes and Kenyon-Wanamingo will be the top seeds in their respective Subsection tournaments when they open Thursday. The Eagles host Zumbrota-Mazeppa and K-W entertains Goodhue. Z-M head coach Chuck Ohm told us on the Cougar coaches show Saturday that his team can head into the game with nothing to lose while the pressure will be on the unbeaten Eagles.

The K-W vs. Goodhue game in Wanamingo will air on KDHL Radio beginning at 4:45PM. The winner plays at 10AM Saturday in Austin.
