Last Saturday I had to run out to the store. In case you do not remember, it was very cold and windy. I suspect this Salvation Army bell ringer was wishing he had chosen another day! Actually this is John, who is a member of the Faribault Fire Department. Notice John did not appear to be very cold, at least not too cold to smile! Of course he was dressed for the cold as he had his firefighting gear on.

I did think about what it would be like if there was a fire or car accident. No matter the time, day or night, hot or cold, people like John will respond to help! They will be out in the cold fighting a fire for as long as it takes to get it under control. They will be on a highway, in a ditch, doing whatever it takes to cut someone out of a car after an accident.

The Salvation Army bell ringers are a part of our Christmas traditions. It helps us remember to do what we can to help the less fortunate. Thank you to John and other volunteer bell ringers. Also thank you to those who will respond to help if there is an accident or something bad happens. In addition to firefighters, that includes city police officers, county sheriffs, and state patrol officers. How about paramedics, doctors and nurses?

During all the family Christmas and church celebrations, these people will be on duty, waiting for the call to come in for help. Thinking about calls for help, emergency dispatchers will also be there to answer the 911 call. These people will celebrate Christmas with their families around their work schedules. Well, maybe it is not proper to call it work schedules. For them, their calling in life to respond to a call for help. They respond with their dedication and training!
