Caledonia, MN (KROC-AM News) - The second man involved in a rolling gun battle with two La Crescent police officers last year is scheduled to be sentenced next month. 20-year-old Wyatt Helfrich recently pleaded guilty to first and second-degree assault charges through a plea agreement that resulted in the dismissal of 13 other felony charges, including multiple counts of attempted murder.

The Holmen Wisconsin man was the person accused of opening fire on the officers during a traffic stop on a highway just outside of the Houston County city in the early morning hours of July 31st last year. A shotgun blast nearly hit Officer Ryan Quanrud as he was approaching a vehicle driven by Helfrich, who then sped away as Officer Quanrud and his partner exchanged gunfire with the occupants of the car.

Helfrich and his passenger, 20-year-old William Wallraff of Kellogg, were eventually captured near Caledonia. Wallraff earlier pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to 13-years in prison. Helfrich is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24th.
