‘Sinister Six’ Movie Will Be a Tale of Redemption

Sony has plans for two more ‘Amazing Spider-Man‘ movies, as well as spin-offs for villains, including Spidey’s greatest foes: the Sinister Six. And while they are the most villainous of the villains, the producers say we can expect a slightly different take on their story when it comes time for their tale to be told in the ‘Sinister Six‘ film, which is being helmed by director Drew Goddard

Over at IGN, producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach divulged more details regarding the upcoming ‘Sinister Six’ spin-off film, in which the villains will get their moment in the spotlight. The original Sinister Six line-up included Doctor Octopus, Electro (who we’ll be seeing in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2‘), Sandman, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, and Mysterio. But as it’s their film, they won’t necessarily be portrayed as the villains. Tolmach says:

There’s no such thing as just a villain. There are villains by virtue of choices that people make but they always begin as humans, as characters. As flawed people; as tragic people. You know great movies have been made about a bunch of bad guys who get together to do something.

So it seems like we’ll be getting something of a more shaded approach to the Sinister Six — a group of guys who come together with more complex motivations and intentions than just, you know, being bad guys who gang up on Spider-Man.

Arad clarifies that the Sinister Six are indeed united by their hatred for Spider-Man, and that their story is one driven by redemption:

And everybody’s looking for redemption; they’re unforgiven. Would you see one of the Sinister Six starting to feel like that? Yes. And people love it, by the way. They love when a villain finds his way back because we’re all very forgiving.

When asked if Spider-Man would be making an appearance in the ‘Sinister Six,’ Tolmach was elusive, as expected:

We’re definitely not going to say what we’re doing in terms of Spider-Man there.

You can read more insights from Arad and Tolmach over at IGN, but what do you guys think about this approach to the Sinister Six? It seems like they’re taking a sort of anti-hero approach rather than an outright villainous one, and we can sort of get behind that concept.
