Le Sueur, MN (KROC-AM News)- A semi-truck driver’s unsuccessful efforts to avoid striking a deer yesterday evening triggered a chain reaction crash on Highway 169 between St. Peter and LeSueur.

The State Patrol says a 42-year-old Shakopee woman hit the brakes on her car when she saw the truck swerving in an attempt to avoid the deer and her car ended up being rear-ended by another passenger vehicle. Both drivers were stopped on the right shoulder when a third driver slow down to avoid the deer carcass on the roadway and was also rear-ended, causing one of the vehicles to come to a stop facing the wrong direction in the left lane of the highway.

The State Patrol says that vehicle was struck by a fifth car, causing the driver of the car that had stopped on the highway to be ejected, while the car that had crashed into it veered across the right lane and struck one of the passengers of a car involved in the original collision.

A total of nine people, including four teenagers as young as 13 years old, were involved in the incident. Six of them were transported to the hospital in nearby Le Sueur with non-life-threatening injuries.
