‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Trailer: Heroes Aren’t Born, They’re Created

You might want to sit down for this one… The ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ trailer is here, and if you thought that maybe this would allay some of your fears about the Michael Bay-produced remake, we have some sobering news for you. This trailer raises more questions than it answers.

The first ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ trailer (which star Will Arnett premiered on the ‘TODAY’ show) opens with a voiceover from William Fichtner, who plays Shredder in the film. He’s not Shredder yet, but he’s talking to April O’Neil (Megan Fox) about how the city is overrun with crime. You would think this would be great for a supervillain like Shredder, but no, he wants to clear the city of that violence and participated in some sort of experiment that would create the mutagen that would create the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With April O’Neil’s dad.

Already we’re seeing some radical deviations from the ‘Ninja Turtles’ canon, which is fine, as long as they make a good movie.

We do get to see a shot of the Turtles, who are massive by the way, towards the end of the clip. The Turtles surf down a snowy mountain on their shells before Raphael launches himself into a bad guy’s truck, smashing it in the most Michael Bay-ian way possible. Later, Michelangelo takes his eye mask off to reveal his face, and…it’s very weird. He sorta looks like a baby? As we said before, they can change some of the history of the Turtles and it wouldn’t be devastating as long as the movie is good. But, so much of the success of this movie rides on whether we believe in this Turtles and connect with the way they look. We won’t say we hate this new look, but it is a little off-putting and we’re not sure we’re connecting in any way with their design.

Here’s how the new ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ movie will go according to the official plot synopsis:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ opens in theaters on May 16.
