Before he was cast as Loki, everyone's favorite Marvel supervillain, Tom Hiddleston actually auditioned for the role of Thor. That part obviously went to Chris Hemsworth, but Marvel liked Hiddleston enough to keep him around (and wisely so). Today, we get our first look at what Hiddleston would've looked like as Thor, and, you know what? It's not bad!

The video that was used to create the animated GIF above is not yet online, but is part of the upcoming 'Thor: The Dark World' DVD and Blu-ray. Here, and in the additional GIF below, we see a little bit of Hiddleston's take on Thor. It's silly to make a snap judgment based on about a two-second animated GIF, but Hiddleston actually looks like he would've made a pretty good Thor. He's not any less muscular than Hemsworth, but it's a leaner muscle. Hemsworth brought a needed bulk to the role and Hiddleston's look probably better fits Loki.

What Marvel has done impeccably well over the past few years is their approach to casting. Whereas Warner Bros. and DC take a big swing (and cut a big paycheck) on someone like Ben Affleck for their Batman, Marvel has gone out and found talent like Hiddleston and Hemsworth, and brought in respected actors like Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson and even Chris Pratt in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and turned them into huge stars. We love Marvel because we love the characters and we are invested in them and so much of that is a testament to the actors and the casting directors.

Take a look at another GIF of Hiddleston (this time, seen briefly in the Thor costume) and look out for the full clip on the 'Thor: The Dark World' DVD and Blu-ray in stores on February 25.
