The Wanamingo Jacks and Cannon Falls Bears are a win away from a State Amateur Baseball Tournament berth following Region 5C opening weekend action in Red Wing. Wanamingo was one of the top four seeds along with Stewartville-Racine, Lake City and Red Wing.  Those teams received opening round byes and didn't play on Saturday.

Sam Roosen allowed two hits over six innings and Noah "China" Grove threw the last three innings for a save in the 9-1 Wanamingo win over the Winona Chiefs.  The two combined to allow 4 hits. Roosen struck out 3 and walked 2.  Wanamingo had 11 hits including 4 doubles in the game.  Sam Roosen had a pair of hits and an RBI including a double.

Eric Swiggum tallied 2 hits including a double, Alex Roosen had a pair of hits and 3 RBI, Sean Wingfield collected a 2RBI double.  Peder Sviggum tallied the other double, Matt Houglum had an RBI hit, Andrew Anfinson and Gavin Roosen had the other hits for Wanamingo.

Cannon Falls defeated Pine Island 9-1 in the opening game of the tournament Saturday behind a 3 hit complete game pitching performance by Jared Woodward.  Woodward struck out 3 and walked 2 working with a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Pine Island pitcher Jeremy Strand took the loss with three Pioneers pitchers throwing in the game.  Kevin Nordquist had two hits including a double and Drew Lohmeyer the only other hit for Pine Island.

Rich Burr led a 15 hit Cannon Falls attack at the plate with 3 hits and 3 RBI, Tanner Jackson had 3 hits and 2 RBI, Luke Winchell had two hits including a double and an RBI, Keith Meyers and Peter Haggerty also collected two hits each.  Brock Peterson had a hit and a sacrifice fly RBI, Carleton Lindow executed a sacrifice fly RBI.  The other hits were stroked by Alex Tauer and Zeke Williams.

In Sunday's 5-1 win over Stewartville-Racine the Bears Keith Meyers went the distance on the hill and scattered 9 hits.  The one run was not earned.  He struck out 3 and walked 1 batter.  The Bears had six stolen bases in the game.  Two by Braxton Lindow, 2 by Tanner Jackson, 1 each for Brock Peterson and Peter Haggerty.  Haggerty and Jackson had 3 hits each, Rich Burr had 2 hits and 3 RBI.

In other Saturday games the Rochester Roadrunners downed Dodge County 1-0 in a pitcher's duel.  Winona bested Randolph 10-2 and Owatonna dominated Waseca 12-2 in 7 innings.

In other Sunday games Lake City downed Rochester 8-1 and Red Wing got by Owatonna 4-2.

The rest of the 5C Tournament will be played in Owatonna.

Elimination bracket games Saturday look like this:  10:00 a.m. Owatonna plays Pine Island, 1:00 p.m. Winona and Dodge County, 4:00 p.m. Randolph tangles with Rochester and 7:00 p.m. it's Stewartville-Racine and Waseca.

Winner's bracket games Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Cannon Falls plays Lake City and at 4:00 p.m. Wanamingo faces Red Wing.

Sunday two more elimination bracket games will be played.  10:00 a.m. the Owatonna/Pine Island winner will play the winner of the Winona/Dodge County game and at 7:00 p.m. it's the Rochester/Randolph winner and Stewartville-Racine/Waseca victor.
