The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 p.m. today for the following counties: Le Sueur, Rice, Waseca, Steele and Freeborn.

A potent but fast-moving system will spread a band of snow across central and east-central Minnesota shortly after daybreak. The initial band may produce a period of heavy snowfall, 1-2 inches per hour, over central Minnesota. Light to moderate snow will continue through the afternoon. The storm will quickly depart by Tuesday evening as it moves into the Great Lakes region.

The heaviest snowfall will occur north of Interstate 94, where 3-5 inches will fall. Elsewhere in the advisory area, a quick 1-3 inches of snow will fall before tapering off. Some sleet and freezing rain also are possible across portions of western and southern Minnesota this morning before changing to snow.

Sleet and snow will develop by 9 a.m., gradually becoming all snow by this afternoon and ending this evening. Expect snow accumulations of 1-3 inches, and ice accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch.

The sleet and snow may cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slick and snow-covered roads and limited visibility. The weather service reminds motorists to use caution while driving.
